Historically, August has shown a pattern of having more deaths among the unhoused population than July, and often more than September. One possible contributing factor to this trend is the intense heat of the summer months. This year, the region experienced increased humidity alongside the heat, which may be linked to a larger number of hurricanes located south of the area on the Pacific side of Mexico.
Local and national policy decisions play a significant role in the health and well-being of the community of persons living without fixed abode on our streets. These policy choices also have long-term effects on the climate. Official county reviews of homeless deaths for 2025 are anticipated in approximately four months, with statistics for the current year expected to be reviewed in about a year's time.
In the interim, efforts can be focused on minimizing these tragic deaths among the unhoused in our communities. Working to provide stable roofs over the heads of this vulnerable population is crucial and can contribute to improving the quality of life for everyone in Anaheim and beyond.
